Take the train to Whitby when Goth Weekend is on – avoid the crowds and take the 14.16 leaving Middlesbrough on Friday or Saturday or the 08.45 or 11.05 on Sundays and spend a day in Whitby with the Goths. There is an entirely different feel to the town and the Goths are an absolute joy, dressed up in imaginative costumes which blend in with the heritage of the town.
There is a whole host of events put on during the weekend. Many people stay overnight. The Youth Hostel on top of East Cliffe is great value and fits in with the atmosphere of Halloween, based so close to Whitby Abbey and St Mary’s church. Booking in advance is a good idea: www.yha.org.uk/hostel/whitby
On Friday the Esk Valley Railway runs a Halloween Music Train and a late evening service as extra. the last service leaves Whitby at 22.25 (10.25 pm). On Saturday the last train leaves at 7.15 pm and on Sunday at 6.05 pm.
Hadleys and Mr Chips are just two of the fish and chip shops in Whitby which have never disappointed us. Mr Chips has a good selection of alternative, sustainable fish to try.
Details of where to go and what to see can be obtained from the Goth website: www.whitbygothweekend.co.uk
