Boating on the Esk

Pleasure Boats at Ruswarp

Pleasure Boats at Ruswarp

Take the train to Ruswarp and walk about five minutes along the riverside (The Carrs) following the signpost to Sleights to Ruswarp Pleasure Boats. Established in 1864, you can hire a rowing boat and row down the river at a leisurely pace. There also canoes available but I much prefer the rowing boats. You can moor up at Riverside Gardens Cafe at Briggswath and have a cup of tea. A beautiful way of relaxing and chilling out. Take a camera to photograph the swans and ducks. This is the only river in Yorkshire where salmon can be found.

We paid £16 for two hours for the three of us…great value.

Call at the Bridge Inn for a pint which is close by the station. It is under new management and the landlady was really friendly. Call at Jacksons butchers in the High Street – early – to get some of their scrumptious pork pies. We were lucky, we got the last three before they sold out.

You can also book accommodation close by the river. I plan to book a short break there as it boasts a hot tub. It is called Chainbridge Riverside Retreat. Pets are allowed so that suits me.
