This gives you four and a half hours at York – enough time for a leisurely lunch and some quality shopping time.

Return on Transpennine’s 16.26 service from York arriving at Middlesbrough at 17.30. change to the Northern service leaving Middlesbrough at 17.40. You will arrive back at Whitby 19.07 (7.07 pm).

Ticket prices are: Off peak day return: Adult £12.90 Child £6.45. Further discounts available for Railcard Holders. To qualify for this ticket, you must change at Middlesbrough, not Darlington, otherwise the fare is a lot more.

Even when its bad weather, the train will get you there. Travelling through the picturesque Esk Valley whatever the weather adds value to the journey. Take advantage of the stopover at Middlesbrough to order breakfast at the Travellers’ Rest cafe. Their huge bacon buns are great! This is a journey to be savoured and compares favourably in travel time with other modes of transport.
